Set in the Ansonborough district, which is dressed in stately oak trees and classic Antebellum design, this sixteen-room boutique hotel comprises three 1804 residences and two carriage houses, all connected by a palmetto-shaded courtyard. Although the architecture is deeply historic, the renovated interiors are delightfully fresh and elegant, and each room has a private, open-air patio. The on-site restaurant has received praise from both Travel & Leisure and Food & Wine, and the hotel’s location is within stone’s throw of the city’s best sites, shopping, and restaurants.

What We Loved: The sun-dappled courtyards, comfortable service, and the combination of lush textiles and natural light. The property’s cute, complimentary light blue bikes (with baskets!) are a darling touch as well.

What We Didn’t Love: Some lower-floor rooms have views onto a busy street corner; we’d rather look out onto the pretty interior courtyard.

Right For: Long lazy weekends and travelers who value impeccable understated taste and discretion.

Wrong For: Someone who wants the scene and services of a high-volume hotel.

Best Time to Visit: Mid March-Mid May; September-Early November

TLF Tip: The popular annual Festival of House and Gardens runs for a month every year beginning in mid-March; plan in advance if you want to peak behind the doors of Charleston’s incredible historic homes.
