There are city hotels, and then there are emblems of national pride. The Silo – a former grain elevator transformed by the deft hand of Liz Biden that stands above Table Bay like a proud and protruding symbol of African achievement – falls into the latter category. Sitting atop the Zeitz Mocaa, the foremost museum of contemporary African art, The Silo lends itself to lofty comparison. Inside its concrete walls, the stark juxtaposition of Biden’s colorful whimsy with the abstract works of local artists creates an unparalleled aesthetic experience that sets the standard for hotel interiors across the continent. Twenty eight rooms, seemingly housed within the building’s bulbous windows, tell the story of a city on the brink of brilliant self discovery.

What We Loved: One of the best city hotels in the world, the design here is unparalleled - the distinctive lantern windows feel like you’re aloft in a hot air balloon.

What We Didn’t Love: The V&A Waterfront is central, though not particularly walkable to other destinations within Cape Town. Fortunately, Ubers are quick and inexpensive throughout the city, or the concierge can call a taxi.

Right For: Design obsessives, city mice, travelers who are always looking for the best view

Wrong For: Families who are looking for a resort feel may not vibe with the Silo’s vertical layout and lack of grounds

Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Cape Town is during summer season, from December to February, when the weather is warm and perfect for exploring the city's outdoor attractions, but the weather is mild and the city dynamic all year round

TLF Tip: The Silo Hotel's building was once a historic grain silo that played a crucial role in South Africa's agricultural economy. Its transformation into a luxury hotel symbolizes Cape Town's evolution into a world-class destination.
