In 1951, Rémy de Haenen, the first person to land a plane on St. Barth’s, decided to put down roots and buy a hilly outcropping above Baie de St. Jean. His home later became the island’s first hotel, hosting guests such as Baron de Rothschild, David Rockefeller, Brigitte Bardot, and Howard Hughes. One of the chicest addresses on the island over the ensuing decades, in November 2019, the hotel made its triumphant comeback after the devastating effects of Hurricane Irma in 2017. The new Eden Rock features 37 redesigned rooms and suites, with contemporary beach-chic décor and plush amenities. Everything about the hotel's topnotch location remains the same, with a gorgeous stretch of beachfront and easy access to local shops, bars, and restaurants.

What We Loved: If you’re headed to St Barth’s for the legendary party scene, there’s nowhere better to base yourself than Eden Rock. Its distinctive red umbrellas and diving platform make frequent appearances in gossip mags because this is the spot where the world’s it crowd banishes the winter doldrums, and the brand-new renovations have made it fresher, cheekier, and more sought-after than ever.

What We Didn’t Love: With just 37 rooms, availability is always a consideration at Eden Rock. And those travelers looking for less boogie down and more wind down may want to consider Cheval Blanc or Le Toiny, located on quieter corners of the island.

Right For: Beach bums, party animals, service snobs, rosé-all-dayers.

Wrong For: Shrinking violets and guests seeking island serenity. The property also lacks a pool (though does that really matter when you’re sitting on one of the best beaches in the Caribbean?)

Best Time to Visit: You’re here for the scene, and the scene is at its peak from mid-December through February.

TLF Tip: Travelers looking for more space for their Caribbean kiki may want to check out Eden Rock Villas, the portfolio of over 150 private island homes that can be booked complete with private chef and butler.
