As the devastating effects of COVID-19 continue to be felt around the globe, the International Olympic Committee, together with the Prime Minister of Japan, has decided to postpone the 2020 Olympic Games. Originally scheduled to begin in Tokyo on July 24, 2020, the games of the XXXII Olympiad will now be held sometime before the end of summer 2021.

This isn’t the first time the Olympics have been postponed. The games were canceled in 1916, 1940, and 1944 due to World War I and World War II, respectively. In a bizarre twist of fate, Tokyo was due to host the 1940 Olympics.
