The Importance of a Happy Closet

After spending eight years styling clients at a luxury lifestyle brand in Atlanta, Local Foreigner IC Maggie Ryan knows the importance of a happy closet — since great style is the foundation for all of life’s best decisions!

Growing up the youngest of four girls on Long Island, I was always striving for independence. I spent many summers seeking an escape and loved the rush of excitement, strength, and freedom my travels gave me. I attended Kent School in Connecticut and lived in Sydney during my studies at Boston College. I spent the last eight years styling clients for a luxury lifestyle brand based in Atlanta called Ann Mashburn.

At Ann Mashburn, I cultivated a large client base, teaching them how to build their wardrobes and how to be confident in their choices while simultaneously dispensing travel advice. I became obsessed with booking my next trip and traveled solo for many years. On these trips I spent time documenting guides, restaurants, and special excursions for future clients. I finally decided it was high time to help my clients book that trip on their bucket list with confidence. I have learned many things from 25 years of traveling and I plan on sharing every nugget of wisdom. I am very excited to be launching my career as a luxury travel consultant with Local Foreigner.

I have always believed that a happy closet is the foundation for many of life’s greatest joys. Looking and feeling your best can inspire you to do so many things — like booking a fabulous trip! Purchasing a new dress or that perfect espadrille you’ve had your eye on for months has the ability to transport you and lift your mood in equal measure. That’s one of the many reasons I love what I do! And why I look forward to continually dispensing wardrobe advice, even as I transition my career to the travel industry.

In Ann’s Mashburn’s blog post called Take It Or Leave It, she describes, in her own effortless way, a few key items that she feels are essential to pack for any trip. Below I have highlighted some fantastic and versatile Ann Mashburn travel pieces that are timeless, modern, and happy. I envision my clients packing these for a holiday getaway to Costa Rica, a summer sojourn on the Amalfi Coast, or a Labor Day getaway to Nantucket.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is such a fantastic destination because it’s equal parts adventure and relaxation. The beauty of its many different ecosystems is truly astounding. On my Costa Rica packing list, I’d opt for simple, chic styles, like cotton shirts and linen pants, maxi dresses, and perhaps a wrap dress for sunset strolls or private dinners on the beach.

Amalfi Coast

If you don’t typically wear vibrant colors, a trip to the Amalfi Coast is the perfect excuse to step outside your comfort zone. I love brilliant florals and pastels — you’ll match the beauty of Amalfi’s gorgeous coastal towns, like Ravello, Praiano, and Positano.

Nantucket

Nantucket is so charming and special with its dune backed beaches and miles of bike paths. The best times to visit are in May and September, when you can really dive in without the crowds. When I’m in Nantucket I opt for classic looks that echo the atmosphere of Nantucket’s golden-age Americana — but with a contemporary twist.

There is nothing better than planning a trip and having that to look forward to — that’s the reason I became a luxury travel advisor. I can’t wait to help clients plan their dream vacations, and dispense all of my styling advice along the way! Happy Travels!
