The Point
Hotel Name: The Point
Number of Rooms: 11
Location: Five hours’ drive due north from NYC, or two and a half hours west from Burlington Airport, on the shore of Upper Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains.
The Point Resort is a distinctive hideaway, a world apart. The Private Adirondack estate, set on the shoreline of a shining mountain lake, marries luxury to nature. The Point is designated as Forbes only 5-star resort in Upstate New York. The retreat was built by William Avery Rockefeller a century ago, as a Great Camp of the North Woods. The fanciful log mansions, crafted of native timber and stone, personified the 19th century romantic notion of roughing it in great comfort, style, and luxury. Today, The Point continues the tradition of honoring guests with its unique combination of warm hospitality, privacy, and old-fashioned fun.
What We Loved: The Adirondacks offer some of the most stunning scenery in the world, and the Point is perfectly calibrated to amplify the natural riches. In the summer, we love heading out on a hike with a perfectly packed picnic; last winter, a TLFer tried her hand at curling on the frozen lake.
What We Didn’t Love: No cell service and no wifi (except for in the resort’s main office), so we hope your boss understands what “off the grid” truly means.
Right For: If you’ve ever wondered how Jay Gatsby would upstate (yes, it’s verb here), this is the spot to learn. Think Moonrise Kingdom, after the IPO.
Wrong For: Dinner is black tie every Wednesday and Saturday, all year round – your feelings on this will reveal whether this is the spot for you or not. The Point is adults-only.
Best Time to Visit: Open May through March
TLF Tip: With its stable of impeccable Hacker-Crafts, a Lincoln-log lean-to in the forest with giant barbeque and a hidden Prohibition-style fold-down bar, and an evening fireworks display, Fourth of July at The Point may be the platonic ideal.
