We’ve always loved Hudson — the arty-two-hours-north-of-Manhattan town that has become something of a Williamsburg Nord, thanks to all of its ex-Brooklynite residents who rented a Subaru one weekend and never returned to their overpriced walk-up on Lorimer Street. But, for a long time, this bohemian enclave has lacked a key ingredient: a hotel cool enough to convince day trippers on the Northeast Regional to pack an overnight bag and actually stay a few days. Enter The Maker, an 11-room boutique that's changing the game in the Hudson Valley. An amalgamation of style, texture, and unabashed individualism, The Maker brings a grounding sense of sophistication to Hudson. As its name suggests, the hotel is a celebration of local makers, with decor inspired by the inherent creativity of the Hudson Valley. Bearing names like "The Architect," "The Artist," and "The Writer," rooms elicit the inner workings of the minds to which they belong, eclectic schemes of diverging design coalescing with pitch perfect ease.

What We Loved: If the devil’s in the details, then call us sinners, because we are eating up every ounce of The Maker’s masterpiece. They’ve thought of everything here — shelves lined with books from The Strand, Neo-Gothic screens from Chicago’s Singer Building, Hans Wegner chairs — every individual feature has a purpose, and a story.

What We Didn’t Love: The Maker’s dark atmosphere is part of its sensual appeal, which is great for illicit affairs and contemplative stints at the bar, but not so great for when you just need to reply to a work email really quick.

Right For: Lovers — of art, design, history, one another. Whether your love is aimed at your travel companion or the hard-cover novel stowed away in your carryon, this place is pure seduction, dripping romance from every painstakingly placed detail. Rooms are like little jewel-toned curio boxes, filled with objects d’art, travelers trinkets, and local mementos. We wouldn’t even blink if the concierge told us the boiler room was worth checking out.

Wrong For: Kids. Did you read what we wrote above?

Best Time to Visit: In pre-pandemic times we’d say something like “fall is the perfect time to enjoy the Maker’s off-the-charts coziness quotient,” but in a time when a trip to Whole Foods feels like an exciting Friday night outing, a stay at The Maker — during any season — will feel as thrilling as a trip to the moon.

TLF Tip: We don’t typically advocate for hotel gyms but The Maker’s “Gymnasium” pays homage to a bygone era of personal fitness. You’ll find vintage pommel horses, gymnastic rings, and boxing bags alongside state-of-the-art contemporary gym equipment in the hotel’s Belle Epoque fitness center.
