Once the most private of private islands - where you had to be pre-approved to even be granted landing rights at the tiny airport (and it helped to be royal, too) - Mustique has evolved over the years. While the Middleton family still makes an annual pilgrimage, the island is open to everyone while still feeling like one of the world's best-kept secrets. The laid-back island is a mere three and a half miles square, sparingly sprinkled with villas ranging from small, breeze-filled hideaways built 40 years ago by chief architect Oliver Messel, to extravagantly chic abodes that could easily pass as boutique resorts. However, there is in fact only one hotel on Mustique and only one bar worth going to - Basil’s, of course!

What We Loved: Mustique’s exclusive history is one of its most alluring assets. Arriving here feels like gaining access to the world’s most prestigious club, where the cost of entry includes adopting lingo like “Jump Up” and “Lady Anne” and learning the difference between Pasture and Macaroni. After a few days on the island, staff will start to feel like family and you’ll start to wonder why you’ve ever chosen to vacation anywhere else.

What We Didn’t Love: There’s definitely a who’s who atmosphere on the island, which might make first timers feel out of place…nothing a night at Basil’s can’t fix.

Right For: People who enjoy members clubs, those looking for a vacation destination to return to year after year, extended families, extravagant honeymooners, privacy seekers

Wrong For: No one?

Best Time to Visit: There’s no bad time of year to visit Mustique, especially considering the Grenadines lie outside of the Caribbean hurricane belt. However, festive availability can be tricky as most villa owners choose to spend the holiday season on the island.

TLF Tip: The legendary Basil’s practically wrote the book on perfect beach bars. Don’t miss Wednesday nights…the Jump Up will become your ultimate IYKYK.
