A retreat in the wooded hillside of upper Napa, this exclusive Auberge resort offers both pampering and pristine natural beauty. The lodgings are sleek, freestanding cottages built with luxuriously modern interiors and rich materials. Private fireplaces and indoor-outdoor bathrooms create a secluded oasis feel, and the beautiful California woods are utterly serene. Activities include hiking, visits to the renowned bathhouse, yoga, and simple relaxation.

What We Loved: When we say California, travelers tend to think of the beach, but the state’s magic owes a lot to its mountains as well. Calistoga Ranch peddles Golden State Hygge and wine-country cozy; with its own on-property vineyard, this is a place that puts the Cab in cabin.

What We Didn’t Love: Service can be a little on the slow side and room interiors aren’t quite as spectacular as their woodsy surroundings.

Right For: Oh, you wanted to drink wine while sitting in a jacuzzi located on the deck of a treehouse? You think that cedar smells like happiness? You want to learn to make a macramé wall hanging or meet resident goats Olive, Pimento, & Pepper? Have we got a place for you.

Wrong For: No cars are allowed on the grounds, so you’ll scoot around on golf carts – not ideal if you like to stroll to dinner. There also aren’t many sweeping views here, as the rooms are nestled in among the trees to create the smallest possible footprint.

Best Time to Visit: March to November.

TLF Tip: On-property activities are next-level at Calistoga Ranch. Tap into your inner wood-nymph by designing a flower crown from blooms foraged on property; then wear it down to the bocce courts, where instructors will teach you how to bowl with one hand and sip Brut Rosé with the other.
