Postcard from Los Cabos
We say that someone from the Local Foreigner team is always on the road, visiting destinations across the globe - but we really mean always. Our monthly Postcard takes you along for the ride, and this month, we're just back from Los Cabos.
The collective name for party central Cabo San Lucas, charming San Jose del Cabo, and the beachfront corridor that connects them, Los Cabos means many things to many people. Rivaling its east coast counterpart, Cancun, as the most popular beach resort in Mexico, Los Cabos is a multi-layered destination, where diverse groups of travelers find their own niche somewhere in the striking desert-meets-ocean landscape. Known for whale watching, deep sea fishing, and yes, Senor Frogs, “The Capes” will endear themselves to you by the time you polish off your first fish taco.
A trip to Cabo is a sure thing - there are fabulous resorts, great margaritas, dreamy light, and a good-time vibe on offer no matter when you travel. The resorts are worlds unto themselves, most with enough restaurants, bars, and pools that you can fill a long weekend or a relaxing week without leaving property. But there's plenty to do for travelers who want to get out and about as well, whether it's snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Sea of Cortez or exploring the dramatic El Arco rock formation during a private boat day. For those seeking a bit more excitement, there's also world-class deep-sea fishing and ATV rides through the desert landscapes.
Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort
Along the crowded Los Cabos corridor, Las Ventanas al Paraiso has managed the impossible -- an utterly blissful retreat where any preconceived notions of what "Cabo" means slip into the abyss between the cacti-studded desert and the Sea of Cortez. Here, dreamy pink sunsets are the backdrop to a focus on relaxation shared between couples, families, and friend groups. At Las Ventanas, paradise means personal butlers proffering cocktails as if by magic, private pools for sun-splashed soaks, and lantern-lit dinners across palapa-roofed terraces. | View the hotel
Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection
Located on a protected enclave of a cove with access to one of Cabo’s best snorkeling reefs, this getaway is a Baja playground for folks of all ages. With tranquil, otherworldly-colored waters and scores of tropical fish and sea turtles to befriend, it's a true paradise experience. A traditional Mexican aesthetic blends with an airy, open layout that invites the best of the outdoors inside (further punctuated by private terraces in each guest room). Fringed by palm trees and mirroring the blue of the Sea of Cortez, the pool complex includes three-tiered sections that look as if they float out towards the horizon. | View the hotel
Park Hyatt Los Cabos at Cabo Del Sol
This spring, the Park Hyatt Los Cabos at Cabo Del Sol will mark Park Hyatt's Mexican debut. The sleek design, which we'd term desert contemporary, is a departure from many neighbors - sandy hues take centerstage both indoors and out, offset by pops of terra cotta and landscaping dotted with cacti. The five pools and 59,000 square foot fitness & wellness space mean this is a place to stay a while. And if you're here for the food, we have good news - the outlets will include a southern Mediterranean spot, and a Mexican restaurant where chefs will incorporate their favorite recipes from their grandmothers. Neighboring Ánima Village will house galleries, multiple restaurants, and luxury retailers, making the experience all the more comprehensive. | View the hotel
Four Seasons Resort and Residences Cabo San Lucas at Cabo Del Sol
The Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Cabo del Sol opened in 2024 and raised the stakes for hotels all along the coast. A tumble of whitewashed buildings with sandy rooflines and private balconies tumble down toward the sand, and clever landscape architecture means there are plenty of private spots to get cozy with a cocktail (our favorites are the firepits dotted in front of Palmerio and surrounded by local flora.) Textiles and furniture by local artisans lend pops of cheerful color to the desert landscape, and service is just as perky. | View the hotel
Flora's Field Kitchen at Flora Farms
Tucked in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, a mile from the Sea of Cortez, and down a pothole-riddled road lies a chic little oasis. Flora Farms harvests 98 varieties of heirloom vegetables and organic herbs, but to call it just a farm would be an understatement -- with a farmstead restaurant, a beer garden, outdoor bar with live music, and artisan workshops, Flora is more like a culinary community.
Acre
Among the most sophisticated culinary experiences on the Baja Peninsula, Acre is destination dining at its finest. The execution of the farm to table concept is fresh and innovative, and the everchanging menu means Acre is constantly reinventing itself. The open-air, view-of-the-fields dining room is casual and welcoming and is attended by some of the best waitstaff in Cabo. And don’t get us started on the bar menu – anything made with the bottled-on-property mezcal is a must.
La Botica
Las Ventanas is home to La Botica, a secretive speakeasy piano bar where vintage apothecary charm meets craft cocktails. Meaning "drugstore," La Botica's drinks menu is excellent, but the highlight is Artist in Residence Rosalía de Cuba, who wows with Cuban, Caribbean, Latin, and international rhythms.
Jardín Secreto Restaurante
If you're headed to San José del Cabo for the beloved Thursday evening art walk, book a table at Jardín Secreto. The whimsical space is hung with lanterns and surrounded by an herb garden, and feels lightyears away from the bumping bars and restaurants that line the strip in Cabo San Lucas. We love the Elder Flower, with tequila, St. Germain, mango, and an ancho chile rim.
El Farallon
Long considered one of the best restaurants in Cabo, El Farallon is located on a series of terraced oceanview patios at the Resort at Pedregal. With a backdrop of giant crashing waves, it’s no surprise that El Farallon’s menu is focused on seafood, though offerings are highly seasonal, and based on the day’s catch. No matter the season, the Baja Bounty will surely be the most grandiose offering of seafood you’ve ever seen on a restaurant table.
Edith's
In 1977, Edith Jiménez moved from Jalapa, in her home state of Guerrero, to Cabo San Lucas. She worked as a waitress at a tiny restaurant called Esthela’s by the Sea, where she learned the culinary traditions of the Baja peninsula. Twenty years later, she bought that very same restaurant and gave it her own name, an homage to her creative menu of blended Baja and Guerrero cuisines. Since then, Edith’s has been a beloved Cabo favorite, known for colorful interiors, large margaritas, and tableside preparations.
Cabo by Private Boat
While there's plenty of on-shore action in Cabo, there's also a whole water world waiting to be explored. On board your private boat, you can explore the area’s renowned reefs, teeming with colorful fish and breathtaking coral. For thrill-seekers, activities like wakeboarding, inflatable tubing, or channeling your inner manta ray on a Subwing are possible. And of course, from early December to mid-April, the adventure intensifies with the opportunity to encounter humpback and grey whales during their migration along the corridor.
Surf's Up
Surf the pristine waves of Cabo’s East Cape with your private instructor, where secluded beaches like Shipwrecks and 9 Palms offer a perfect escape for thrill-seekers. This stunning stretch of coastline is a surfer’s dream, with uncrowded breaks and breathtaking scenery. Serious surfers can upgrade their day with boat access for tow-in rides at Zippers.
Tequila Sunset
Honing your palate for agave is practically a requirement for a trip to Cabo, where tequila is a way of life. Guided by expert mixologists, explore the origins and distillation methods of tequila, mezcal, and sotol, with a personalized journey based on your palate and preferences. Surrounded by handcrafted spirits, sample distinct varieties while learning about the history, people, and craftsmanship behind each bottle. Pair your tasting with local fruits, spices, and chocolate for a truly immersive adventure in agave culture.
Mex and Match
The epic food scene in Mexico City and the cobblestoned charm of San Miguel de Allende are both easy hops from Cabo, meaning this flop-and-drop locale doesn't have to be a standalone stop - try incorporating into an itinerary that includes more facets of this kaleidoscopic country.
Party Pipeline
There are non-stop flights between Cabo and Las Vegas. We don't feel like we need to say more.
Ski-esta
With a straight shot from Salt Lake City to Cabo that takes less than three and a half hours, rest your ski-weary legs with a massage and some poolside guac. Or go the other direction, because what's chicer than skiing with a tan?
