Peak to Peak: The Dolomites

Ever-intrigued by drama (the geographical kind, that is), Kelly Brennan is always searching for her next mountain getaway – whether that means an actual trek to a summit or just a room with a killer view. Peak to Peak is her tribute to alpine destinations and the adventures and indulgences that accompany them.

When we think about the European destinations we can’t wait to return to, Italy tops the list for many Americans and it’s easy to understand why. The destination offers something for everyone – history and architecture buffs, foodies, oenophiles, beach bums, hotel aficionados, the list goes on. Though it’s often overlooked by first and even second time visitors, Italy’s world-class skiing and hiking opportunities are some of the best in Europe — the UNESCO-protected Dolomite mountain range is high on my personal wish list!

Location

Located three hours north of Venice, this gorgeous alpine destination lies between the northern Italian provinces of Trentino and Alto Adige and provides a convenient culture/adventure combo.

See + DO

In the winter, travelers will find a wonderland of powdery ski runs at Dolomiti Superski Area, as well as charming mountain towns that have maintained an Italian sensibility. Alta Badia, the culinary center of the European Alps, offers Michelin-star restaurants with culture, history, and views to boot.

The summer is often less frequented but no less stunning, with wildflowers, hiking trails, climbing routes, and sparkling lakes to fill your days.

Best Time to Visit

June-October is prime for warm-weather adventures like hiking and mountain biking, while December-March is prime ski season.

Where to Stay

Family owned and operated for three generations, Rosa Alpina in San Cassiano, Alta Badia blends Italian style with alpine comfort and genuine hospitality. The hotel offers four restaurants, including the 3-Michelin star St. Hubertus and Restaurant Fondue, dedicated to the decadent art of dipping — so that your après can be as elevated as your ski day. This hotel is perfect for the traveler who loves to experience natural wonders by day, and retreat to a pampering chalet by evening.
